About a month ago we sold our condo and bought a house. While we were very much aware of the fact that it would require a lot more maintenance then owning a condo, we did not think everything would hit us all at once.
The first noticeable thing was that the previous owner was not the cleanest person in the world. We noticed when we viewed the house and did another walk through that the carpet was not in the best of shape upstairs. Well now it is a bit worse. She had a plant at the top of the stairs that had been leaking for a long time and did not know it. She put a sticky, yes a sticky that said "Sorry, I did not know that plant was leaking, I hope you can get this stain out". The next stain is that she spilled coffee all down the stairs. These were the most noticeable.
The one thing we were really excited about was the Hot Tub. We went out today to check it out and there was a 4" layer of ice on the bottom of the tub. Plus, dirt, sunflower seed sheets, paper, Kleenex, twigs, and stuff I am not even sure what it was. So my afternoon was filled with filling it, getting the ice out, draining it, cleaning it, cleaning the filters, and going to the spa store to get a new bromine and chemicals. Not fun. But all the hard work has paid off. We got it filled and the chemicals added before it got too dark to see and turned it on. Hopefully we will be able to use it tomorrow. :0)
Our other big expense today was having the ducts cleaned and sanitized. It's made a world of difference in the house. We also made a quick trip to Home Depot for a shovel, bucket, garden hose and other minor things.
Besides the small annoyances, it's nice to have a house. Owen and I are still both amazed of the community. We are so use to condo living and apts that it's rather unusual to see people walking their dogs outside, children laughing and playing. It's all stuff I could definitely get use to. :0)
